One World Running
Director Ana Weir was named a 2005 Hero of Running by Runner’s World magazine. She was honored at a gala celebration on Nov. 4, two days before the ING New York City Marathon. It was a wonderful award for Ana, who puts in so much work for the project. In the photo on the right, she and World Championship 100-meter gold medalist Lauryn Williams smile for the camera. Let’s hope this is the start of a great 2006 for Ana and the shoe project, and runners around the world.

Drop-off Locations

The majority of the shoes come from individuals, and from running clubs or Girl Scout troops (for example) that put on shoe drives. Some of the shoes are new; many are "near-new," which are the ones sent overseas. The shoes that are beat up and not suitable for shipment are sent to Nike in Beaverton, Ore., through Boulder's Eco-Cycle program, to be ground up and made into running tracks and playgrounds through the Reuse-a-Shoe program.

If mailing shoes, please send the Daily Camera newspaper address listed below.

About One World Running

Mission Statement

One World Running is an international program promoting an awareness of health, fitness and nutrition by providing running shoes to those in need in the United States and around the world. We also put on 5K walk/runs to foster an enviroment of exercise and to increase understanding and goodwill between people.

About One World Running

Since 1986, a group of runners in Boulder, Colorado, has collected, washed and sent to Third World countries new and "near-new" athletic shoes, T-shirts and shorts, along with medicine and school and art supplies. Shoes for Africa was started after sports journalist Mike Sandrock returned from a coaching and racing trip to Cameroon, West Africa, sponsored by the U.S. Information Agency. Many of the runners from Cameroon ran barefoot (and were still able to beat Sandrock), and afterwards, a group of Boulder elite runners including Lorraine Moller, Steve Jones and Arturo Barrios began shipping shoes to West Africa. Since then a group of runners in Boulder has collected, washed, and sent shoes, T-shirts, and shorts to needy athletes and children around the world. The project continues to grow with shoes and athletic equipment being sent in from around the United States. Now called "One World Running" the group is a 100-percent volunteer organization, and the program has now expanded globally. The West End 3K criterium road race in downtown Boulder was started in August, 2001, as fundraiser for Shoes for Africa. In a recent addition, soccer cleats are now collected, as well as baseball equipment.

Shoes are dropped off at local running stores, and a Boulder laundry, Community Plaza, donates the washing – but you can always wash the shoes before shipping them to us, in cold water and air dried (as the dryer can melt the glue, as we found out!) Shipping has been tight recently, as the airlines have cut back on their donations. Now called One World Running, we are a Colorado non-profit organization with federal 501-c-3 tax-exempt status. Each $195 raised is sufficient to send roughly 50 pairs of shoes to sub-Saharan Africa (or double that amount of shoes to Haiti and Central America).

Happy Boxing Day!

Stephen's name means "crown," and he was the first disciple of Jesus to receive the martyr's crown. Stephen was a deacon in the early Christian Church. The apostles had found that they needed helpers to look after the care of the widows and the poor. So they ordained seven deacons, and Stephen is the most famous of these.

God worked many miracles through St. Stephen and he spoke with such wisdom and grace that many of his hearers became followers of Jesus. The enemies of the Church of Jesus were furious to see how successful Stephen's preaching was. At last, they laid a plot for him. They could not answer his wise argument, so they got men to lie about him, saying that he had spoken sinfully against God. St. Stephen faced that great assembly of enemies without fear. In fact, the Holy Bible says that his face looked like the face of an angel.

The saint spoke about Jesus, showing that He is the Savior, God had promised to send. He scolded his enemies for not having believed in Jesus. At that, they rose up in great anger and shouted at him. But Stephen looked up to Heaven and said that he saw the heavens opening and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.

His hearers plugged their ears and refused to listen to another word. They dragged St. Stephen outside the city of Jerusalem and stoned him to death. The saint prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!" Then he fell to his knees and begged God not to punish his enemies for killing him.

After such an expression of love, the holy martyr went to his heavenly reward. His feast day is December 26th.

Merry Christmas, Shoes and All!

This has been a wonderful day filled with shoes and gifts of all other sorts. Coach bags, Coach wallets, Coach coin purses, sweaters and shirts and play station 2's. Baby phat coats and all sorts of good smellum's from bath and body works. It has been a grand day topped off by checks for big dollars and let's not forget the shoes. Timberland hiking boots now live under the christmas tree for me. I got dirty Fila a pair too. Not the hiking boots, but the Nelly's. (You know, like L'il Kim getting out the range rova' Timberlands.) Last but not least, my light blue sperry topsiders, made my last shoe wish come true. Santa was very good this year in many, many ways. And he did not forget the shoes!

All is right in the world right now. Last night I was able to see "It's a Wonderful Life." I just love that movie. I went to the 11pm candlelight service at church. It was just beautiful with all those candles. Right now I am watching "The Santa Clause." I love that movie as well. I will have you to know that one of dirtyFilas friends came over on yesterday to exchange gifts with her and we were talking about how Santa got into homes. She had the nerve to say that he did not have a chinmey in her house to come down. Can we say I was flabbergasted. Well, I had to explain to her that on Christmas eve every house in the world that does not have a real fireplace, has the magical one that santa comes down on Christmas eve. Her mother needs to rent The Santa Clause for her! By the time I got finished with her she was a believer!

On yesterday, dirty Fila and I were at home wrapping gifts and we heard sleigh bells. Every year we hear them. Really we do. And we know that Santa is real. We had no idea where theyare coming from. We are at home, on our own and we hear sleighbells ring for just about 5 seconds or so. We just look at each other. The fat man really livith!

My shoes were just a little melancholy on Christmas Eve's Eve. I was shopping at a major department store, looking in the sale section of the shoe department. I was checking out the boots, the BCBG girls, the Fry boots and Steve Madden boots and shoes. There were four very together black men sitting in chairs waiting for their wives/girlfriends as they shopped. They looked to me in their mid to late 20's. That is not normally what you normally see. They were all sitting waiting as they shopped. One picked up a pair of boots and commented that they were on sale and the price was $350.00.

Obviously they were black men with jobs, who were part of a cohesive family. It made me sad. just a little as it is just me. It made me wistful. Wanting what seems to be so elusive to me... a good relationship with a black man who has it going on. They seem to be so scarce where I am. The good ones are all taken and if you happen to meet anyone who is half way decent, most likely they are not from where I am. I think I need to move. Seems like it will be just me and the cats once dirty Fila leaves. They say that true love is supposed to strike when you least expect it, but I have been least expecting it for 10 years. When it is supposed to happen? Maybe it is not for me. I must not be the one to have the big wedding or even a small one in a beautiful gown. Some people may be destined to be alone. I fear I am one of them.

There just HAS to be someone out there for me. There just has to be. There has to be another jazz loving, Vivialdi humming, Celtic music loving, Masterpiece Theatre fanatic, public television watching, beaching combing, mystery and horror reading, npr, classical and new age listening, eclectic, gregarious person out there for me. I've been waiting for 10 years. Strike now, please, the iron is hot. Strike now. There is no time like the present! Maybe by next christmas, I will have the greatest present of all---Love!

The Pope's Red Hat!

VATICAN CITY Dec 22, 2005 — Whether it's Prada and Gucci, or just fancy ecclesiastical tailoring, Pope Benedict XVI is his own man when it comes to dressing. Just days before Christmas, Benedict showed up at his weekly public audience in St. Peter's Square wearing a fur-trimmed stocking cap that could have passed for a Santa Claus hat.

Earlier this month, he made another fashion statement donning a red velvet cape trimmed in ermine for the traditional papal visit to the statue of the Madonna near the Spanish Steps that marks the beginning of Rome's Christmas season.

Coming after gossip about his wearing Gucci sunglasses and bright red Prada loafers, the vintage styles have turned Benedict into something of a fashion celebrity.

"Those red shoes have made quite an impression," said Vatican historian Alberto Melloni.

Benedict's predecessor, John Paul II, had no use for fancy papal attire. Most often he put on the basic white cassock and white gold-trimmed sash. In winter, however, he enjoyed a crimson wool cloak trimmed in gold braid, at times allowing children to play hide and seek in its deep folds.

The 78-year-old Benedict lacks John Paul's natural charisma, and the trappings of Vatican splendor may be a way to compensate.

The bright red Santa cap certainly has a distinguished papal pedigree.

Called a "caumaro," the long forgotten head-covering dates back to the Middle Ages and figures in many famous papal portraits, including one of Julius II by Raphael. It was last worn by John XXIII, who was pontiff more than 40 years ago.

The velvet cape called a "mozzetta" has also been part of official papal attire, but hadn't been seen since John XXIII's successor, Paul VI, in the 1970s. With its regal trimming, it is reminiscent of a time of papal political power some prefer to relegate to history books.

But those who know Joseph Ratzinger from his years as head of the Vatican's doctrinal office dismiss any notion of vanity in the new pope's dressing habits.

"He wouldn't know Gucci from Smoochi," said Marjorie Weeke, a former official at the Vatican's Social Communications office.

News from the Vatican!

VATICAN CITY, DEC 16, 2005 (VIS) - Yesterday evening, following the annual pre-Christmas Mass for Roman university students, celebrated in the Vatican by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope arrived in the basilica to greet the students. The tradition of celebrating this Mass dates back to Servant of God John Paul II, who upheld the custom throughout the 26 years of his pontificate.

Benedict XVI greeted the rectors, professors, chaplains and students from Italian universities, as well as student delegations from various European and African countries, and participants in a world congress for the pastoral care of foreign students, which is being promoted by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples.

"Continue your reflections," said the Pope in his address, "on the new humanism, bearing in mind the great challenges of modern times and seeking to bring faith and culture together harmoniously. How important it is at this moment in history to cultivate attentive cultural and spiritual research!"

The Holy Father expressed his contentment at the fact that the five faculties of medicine in Rome have agreed to collaborate in certain fields concerning life, adding: "From a pastoral perspective, I appreciate the decision to dedicate more profound consideration to the theme of transmitting the faith, with a formative path that involves both students and teachers."

The Holy Father then called on young people "to follow joyfully the itinerary of your Christian formation," and to associate it with their daily studies. "It is necessary to rediscover the beauty of having Christ as the Master of one's life, and thus freely and consciously renewing one's own profession of faith."

Turning to consider foreign students, the Pope pointed out how young people leaving their country of origin in order to study "face no small number of problems, especially the risk of a crisis of identity, and of a loss of spiritual and moral values However, he went on, "for many young people the chance to study abroad represents a unique opportunity ... to contribute to the development of their own countries, and to participate actively in the mission of the Church. It is important to continue on the journey we have begun in order to meet the needs of these brothers and sisters of ours."

With reference to the forthcoming Christmas celebrations, Benedict XVI made a call "to grasp the fullness of the message with which this feast presents us. God became Man, He came to dwell among us. Let us prepare our hearts to welcome Him Who came to save us by giving His life."

The Holy Father concluded: "May you be guided by Mary Most Holy, 'Sedes Sapientiae.' Her icon, which is being taken around various nations, is now passing from the Polish to the Bulgarian delegation, to continue her 'peregrinatio' in the university cities. May she, the faithful Virgin, Mother of Christ, obtain for each of you and for your academic institutions the light of divine Knowledge, Christ the Lord."

Christmas and Cats

Carnival of Cats

Leave christmas things around and the cat will be sure to get into it. This is my Disney santa hat. I think my cat wants to wear it. After batting it around and biting it fo about ten minutes it was on to the next thing. The birds! I have birds on my tree and they are the same ones I have been using for the past 7 years. You would think that the cat would have some sort of learning curve when it comes to those christmas birds. She does not.

Every year when ever the tree is up, she spends her days (while I am at work) stalking and hunting my bird ornaments. Eveyday I come home and find bird ornaments on the floor. Others too, where she has obviously jumped up into the tree trying to reach the bird ornaments. They used to be all over, even near the bottom of the tree but finally in the past 4 years, they only go near the middle and top. That is supposed to make it harder for my cat to get, reach, hurl herself at. NOT!

I even have changed style of birds. They used to be the nice ones made of feathers until I saw her walking around with her kill in her mouth, holding it, like a victory kill. Feathers would be everywhere. Now I use the ceramic? metal? something? clip on ones that are gold or silver glittered. Very pretty but my cat STILL hunts them. You would think that after all these years, she would know what that christmas tree and the birds on them are all about. Any suggestions let me know.

Shoes as Idea

What can I say except shoes fantastico! These very creative shoe designs are by Mark Schwartz. He does original art, limited editions prints and private commissions. He is an acclaimed shoe designer.

Shoe As Idea

AsI looked at all the beautiful images on his site, Shoes as Idea, his work reminded me a little of Andy Warhol and his lovely shoes. Don't you agree? Mark Schwartz seems to be an up and coming artist to keep an eye on. These are some of my favorites from his collection. I love this next one called "Too Blue." Some of the prints remind me also of Manolo Blahnik.

Mark Swartz also has practical everyday applications of his works. He features wall decor, wallpaper and prints for lamp shades and other home items. I thought that was really neat. I love this picture in the foyer. I need one for my foyer! This is from his "Works in Action" collection.

Howard Stern: The Last of a Dying Breed!

Today was the day! The last Howard Stern show on terrestrial radio. Luckily I had the day off so I could listen and watch it live on Yahoo! It was spectacular! I just love Howard! He gave a great speech about his 20 years of broadcasting and how free the future will be. Over the last few weeks I have been able to catch bits and pieces of the show on the way to work as he had celebrities on for the last time and played bits and skits of the last 20 years for the last time. Man I will miss Howard in the mornings. I do not have a satellite radio yet, but it is on my christmas list.

Right now Howard is at the Hard Rock Cafe where there will be a party all day, concert by Cheryl Crow and him visiting with fans. Most of the whack pack is there. I am so glad this is being broadcast live on Yahoo! I can be there while I am not there! See Howard live on Yahoo at this link!

Any regrets? According to Howard he regrets that young broadcasters are being shot down with all the rules. He will be on vacation for a week and then will go to his new studio, reflect and begin anew. He is happy that he made people laugh and that he changed the face of terrestrial radio.

Of course I had to join the Howard Nation. You can too. Just sign up! Howard is now making his way into the Hard Rock Cafe now after meeting with the press. He is being swarmed by the press! They are now replaying his final speech. He is the King of All Media!

Howard also now has a podcast. Load it up on your ipod! Check it out here! Howard Nation Podcast!

At noon Cheryl Crow will be performing live at the Hard Rock Cafe. Hey now!

Wow! Now that is a sexy picture of Howard.
Howard in Outer Space!

Robin Quivers is now being interviewed on Howard 100 News. She says that when they get to Sirius, they want to be the "thing" that changes broadcasting there. She is talking about how she met Howard and all their years together. She gives it three years for them to go straight to the top.

Howard 100 News just announced that Martha Stewart will indocturnate Howard Stern into Sirius satellite radio! Who would have thought that. Martha!? She is my woman too! I love Martha Stewart. I was going to sign off and just catch up tonight, but I have to see Martha and Howard. I guess she is a fan. Who knew? Noone I know can believe I am a fan of Howard either. Martha is already on Sirius satellite radio.

Now we are all waiting on Martha to arrive for everything to begin. She is late. The festivities were to begin at noon. It is now 12:22pm.

Well! Howard and Martha! What a pair. She had to welcome in a new neighbor and coworker. Howard is on saying he can now say the word "Sirius" and not AAH AAH AAH. Howard has asked Martha to deliver his robo spanker and wheel of sex to him. Martha was a little leary about that! She said she would let Howard know. Wendy the Retard and John the Stutter, Crackhead Bob, Gary the Retard, Maryanne from Brooklyn and Double A was there with Howard on the stage. See Howard live on Yahoo at this link!

They just announced that 40 million people are on Yahoo watching this live like I am. That is a heck of a lot of people! January 9th is the date for his first show on Sirius. One last thank you from Howard for the last 20 years.

Cheryl Crow has just begun to perform. See Howard live on Yahoo at this link! So far so good!

Richard Pryor: Comedic Shoes

The pioneering comedian, whose audacious style influenced generations of standup artists, died Saturday of a heart attack at age 65, said his business manager, Karen Finch. He had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the nervous system.

By expressing his heart, anger and joy, Richard Pryor took comedy to its highest form.

Richard Pryor is a legend. He will be missed.

Holiday Shoes

Eventhough I have over 70 pairs of shoes now, I can never find any shoes to wear. How crazy is that? I had a christmas party to go to this past weekend and I was almost an hour late because I could not find any shoes in my closet to wear. I ended up with a heap of black, silver and gold party shoes in the floor in front of the mirror. Finally I decided on a simple black dress pump. You can never go wrong with that. All the others were "to" something. To high, to short, to much strap, to chunky looking with the dress, to, to to, the list goes on.

Here are some pretties that I just love. Maybe I need to add a few of these to my wardrobe! A few of these styles I do not have already.

Tookie on Tookie

On His Years as a Crip:
"I have a despicable background. I was a criminal. I was a co-founder of the Crips. I was a nihilist."

"I functioned primarily on street wit. I managed to make it to the 12th grade. The teachers were insipid in their methodology." "Cripping was all I knew. I lived it. I breathed it. I walked it and I talked it."

"My courage was predicated on violence, on a negative reputation, on drugs, on ignorance. The courage I have now, or fortitude, is based on faith."

On His Transformation:
"People forget that redemption is tailor-made for the wretched."

On the Case Against Him:
"I always ask the question: Can a black man in America receive justice? I can say to you or anybody else that the answer is absolutely no. There's a myriad of things that bring me to this conclusion~~ prosecutorial misconduct, the biased selection of juries, the issues of informants, the exclusion of exculpatory evidence, illegal interrogation of witnesses. It's commonplace. It's deeply ingrained in the California criminal justice system."

On the Man the Jury Saw:
"I was darned near twice this size. I had an indelibly entrenched grimace on my face. I had total disdain for the law enforcement system and it showed. And I was shackled."

On the Families of the Victims:
"To threaten me with death does not accomplish the means of the criminal justice system or satiate those who think my death or my demise will be a closure for them. Their loved ones will not rise up from the grave and love them. I wish they could. I sympathize or empathize with everyone who has lost a loved one. But I didn’t do it. My death would not mollify them."

On His Work With Children:
"They can empathize with me. I pretty much experienced all the madness they're going through."

"I feel a sense of bliss within. I like to see the viability of youth."

"I don’t take myself seriously. I do take my helping children and writing books exceedingly seriously."

On Taking Responsibility for the Murders:
"How can a person express contrition if he's not guilty?"

"If I were culpable of these crimes, I'd be on my knees, begging everybody."

On What He Would Have Said to Mr. Schwarzenegger:
"First and foremost, I would say that I’m innocent. Second, I believe that if I’m allowed to get a clemency or an indefinite stay, it would allow me to continue to proliferate my positive message, including a collaboration with the N.A.A.C.P., to create a violence-prevention message for at-risk youth."

On Death Row:
"I've never seen a millionaire here."

"You're surrounded by a motley of different characters. Within the madness, there are those other than myself who have opted to redeem themselves.

"The longer I sit in this animalistic cage, the more human I become. I've learned not to allow the negative ambience to control me. I've risen above all of that, like a phoenix, a black phoenix."

"Had I still been in society I never would have been able to make the kind of impact I can now."

On the Death Penalty:
"We know that it's not a deterrent. It's wasted a lot of the taxpayers’ money. The death penalty in a sense is a disguise for vengeance."

"It's a barbaric system that propagates, ‘to resolve murder is to murder someone,’ another oxymoron. It doesn't work."

"It's a more sophisticated type of killing than a mob lynching. It's pathetic."

"In reality, there's no disparity between this place and Texas."

On What He Misses:
"My freedom. Being able to hold my grandchild. Being able to go to the beach. Women. Food. My mother."

On the Prospect of Execution:
"They have the audacity to ask, 'Do I want a last meal?' Absolutely not. 'Do I want anyone present?' Absolutely not. 'Do I want a preacher?' Absolutely not. I want nothing from this institution."

"I feel good. I really do. I feel good physically and mentally and spiritually. Had I not undergone this redemptive transformation, I guarantee I’d really be a mess."

"I have that joie de vivre. I love life."

"My faith sustains me. I don't crack under pressure."

"The least I can do is maintain my dignity. I confront madness with integrity. I don’t walk around like some shuffling black man."

"I'll go through it with dignity, with integrity, with love and bliss in my heart. I smile at everything, and I’m quite sure I’ll smile then, too. I smile to myself, and I don't worry about it."

Evil Squirrel Shoes

Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.

Passers-by were too late to stop the attack by the black squirrels in a village in the far east, which reportedly lasted about a minute.

They are said to have scampered off at the sight of humans, some carrying pieces of flesh.

A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources, although scientists are sceptical.

The attack was reported in parkland in the centre of Lazo, a village in the Maritime Territory, and was witnessed by three local people.

A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say.

"They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

"When they saw the men, they scattered in different directions, taking pieces of their kill away with them."

Mikhail Tiyunov, a scientist in the region, said it was the first he had ever heard of such an attack.

While squirrels without sources of protein might attack birds' nests, he said, the idea of them chewing a dog to death was "absurd".

"If it really happened, things must be pretty bad in our forests," he added.

Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory.

A Lazo man who called himself only Mikhalich said there had been "no pine cones at all" in the local forests this year.

"The little beasts are agitated because they have nothing to eat," he added.

Mentally Ill Shoes!

kind of sad but I do not think the marshall had any other choice. Crazy man yelling bomb and running equals death. It was his only choice.

American Airlines Flight 924 was in Miami on a stopover during a flight from Medellin, Colombia, to Orlando, Florida, when the man, identified as Rigoberto Alpizar, said there was a bomb in his carry-on backpack, a Department of Homeland Security official said.

Alpizar was confronted by a team of federal air marshals, who followed him down the boarding bridge and ordered him to get on the ground, the official said.

When Alpizar appeared to reach into his backpack, he was shot and wounded, the official said, adding that the marshals' actions were consistent with their training. Officials said later that the man died of his injuries.
