Shoes to Nicaragua

We had a nice note back from the school which received shoes in Jalapa, Nicaragua. The shipment was delivered to a new school. Professor Debbie Young wrote" We have witnessed the use of the many shoes you have provided for so many people in Nicaragua. and how your shoes are going to good use by the young children now attending school. Thank you so much." And thanks to everyone who sent in shoes, clothing and medical supplies.

Record Numbers

Congratulations to Chris Scheele for reaching his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. Chris's Eagle Scout project was collecting, boxing and shipping shoes to One World Running. He ended up with 1,150 pairs, which were sent off in two shipments: one to Haiti, the other to Ghana.

Chris now has the record for most shoes collected by an individual in one shipment, although Jillian Roberts is closing in on him for total number of shoes.

All of us involved with the project say "Thank you" to Chris, and wish him the best in the years to come.

Spring Break in Belize - You are Invited

We are inviting you to spend Spring break with One World Running in Belize to distribute shoes, help with community service at schools and help put on a race.

UPDATE: The 2009 race was a big success, with three distributions of more than 1,500 shoes taking place in Belize City and in two rural towns. The prime minister showed up, as well as the mayor of Belize City. Thanks to the 12 students from Ohio State who spent their spring break helping pass out shoes and put on the race.

Next year's race is set for March 22-30, 2010
The trip starts in Belize City, where we will meet up with a group from Ohio State University.

Downtown Dashers - Greensboro, NC

The Dashers, based out of the downtown YMCA, collected shoes last summer, and again in the fall. Kudos to Naomi Ballen, for organizing the collections, to Bryan James and Hughes Metalworks for shipping the shoes. Now we all have runners to train with in Greensboro!

GoreOutdoor

W.L. Gore & Associates in Flagstaff, Ariz., has put together its first shoe collection, thanks to the efforts of Theresa Holland, Susan Spinelli, Lance Beavers.

Liz Wiggins and Wendy Moore at the Gore Outdoor Store were able to come up with nine pairs of unused trail running shoes, which will be prizes at the February One World Race in Tela, Honduras.

Earthday 5k Race donates shoes

The first annual Earth Day Run to Recycle 5K was held April 22 in Athens, Ohio. The $5 entry fee went to ship shoes to the Boulder headquarters of One World Running.

Drop-off Locations

The majority of the shoes come from individuals, and from running clubs or Girl Scout troops (for example) that put on shoe drives. Some of the shoes are new; many are "near-new," which are the ones sent overseas. The shoes that are beat up and not suitable for shipment are sent to Nike in Beaverton, Ore., through Boulder's Eco-Cycle program, to be ground up and made into running tracks and playgrounds through the Reuse-a-Shoe program.
