WIMBLEDON, England - Maria Sharapova was ushered from Siberia to America at age 7 to become a champion, and she did just that yesterday on the biggest tennis stage in the world.
Sharapova, 17, often compared with Anna Kournikova for her Russian background and striking blond looks, proved she was far more than a cover girl by beating two-time defending champion Serena Williams on Centre Court, 6-1, 6-4, for the Wimbledon title.

Cornerstone of new tower to be laid at WTC site
NEW YORK (July 4, 5:42 am ADT) - A 20-ton slab of granite that will become the cornerstone of the skyscraper replacing the World Trade Center has an inscription honoring "the enduring spirit of freedom," a source said Sunday.
The groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Sunday officially begins construction on the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower, designed as a twisting glass and steel tower that evokes the Statue of Liberty nearby.
The stone to be laid is granite from New York's Adirondack Mountains that is
flecked with the state gemstone, garnet.
According to a source close to the rebuilding effort, it is inscribed: "To honor and remember those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 and as a tribute to the enduring spirit of freedom - July Fourth, 2004." The source spoke on condition of anonymity. Full Story.
